Watch back: Denis Kelly and Ronnie Hughes in Conversation

Watch artist, Denis Kelly and invited guest speaker, artist Ronnie Hughes, discuss the work in Kelly’s solo exhibition Look, then Look Again, previously shown in the RHA  Ashford Gallery.


Born in Belfast in 1965, Ronnie Hughes studied at the University of Ulster, Belfast, receiving an MA in Fine Art in 1989. Hughes has had numerous solo exhibitions throughout Ireland and beyond (including Butler Gallery, Context, Goethe Institute, Hugh Lane Golden Bough, Millennium Court, Ormeau Baths Gallery, Pulse Miami, Rubicon Gallery, Sirius Arts Centre, Steve Turner Los Angeles) and has participated in many group exhibitions worldwide.

In 2017, Strange Attractors, a large survey show of his recent work, received a major Arts Council grant to tour the Model Sligo, Limerick City Gallery and the RHA Dublin. The show was accompanied by an extensive publication designed by Atelier and including texts by Martin Herbert and Joanne Laws. During the tour, NVTV produced a television programme, ‘Collapse the Box – Ronnie Hughes’, which featured a 25 minute interview with Marianne O’Kane Boal at the RHA.

Hughes’ work has been written about extensively and he has received a multitude of awards including a one-year residency in New York (PS1, 1990-91) and three-month residencies at Banff Arts Center, Canada (1994) and Bemis Arts Center, Nebraska (1997). In 2006 he was awarded both the ‘Irish Artist Fellowship’ – a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center and a two-month residency at the ‘Albers Foundation’ in Connecticut.

Hughes’ work is held in many public and corporate collections, including both Irish Arts Councils and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. He has lived in County Sligo since 1995 when he began lecturing in Fine Art at the Institute of Technology Sligo. Hughes is represented by Gibbons and Nicholas and Fenderesky Gallery.

Denis Kelly is an emerging visual artist based in County Kildare. He holds an MFA in painting from NCAD and a BA in Visual Arts Practice from IADT Dún Laoghaire. Previously, he worked for a number of years as a graphic designer in Dublin before taking up painting in 2007.

Recent solo exhibitions include A Sense of Order, A Sense of Disorder at Galeria Weber & Weber, Turin, Italy, 2018; Impeccable Defect at Pallas Projects, Dublin, 2017; Structure/Void at Riverbank Arts Centre, Newbridge, 2016 and Edge at the Municipal Gallery, dlr Lexicon, Dún Laoghaire, 2016.

Group exhibitions include RHA Annual, Dublin, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2015, 2012; Pallas Projects Irish Art Now (Auction), Dublin, 2019; Anonymous Drawings, Berlin, 2018; Peripheries Open, Gorey, 2017; RUA Annual Belfast, 2014, 2012, 2009; RUA RED Open, 2013, 2010.
