Preface by Des McMahon PRHA. Essays by Professor Roy Foster, Edward Murphy (NCAD), Doctor Yvonne Scott (TRIAC), Anita Griffin (RIA) and Charles Tyrell.
“Each year the Annual Exhibition brings together the works of members, invited artists and artists selected by open submission. The Academy is deeply conscious of the importance of open submission as a vehicle for the showcasing of new artists and their artistic proposals. Consequently, this year the number of invited artists has been reduced in order to increase the scale and opportunities for open submissions. This year the Academy is introducing a more specific assessment structure by which the works are selected. Open submissions are one of the oldest forms of public display of contemporary art. By being selected from open submission these exhibitions have a meritocratic transparency and their relevance is not only as a spotting ground where other artworld professionals look at new trends and talents but it also presents to us “the public” a body of work from new artists that we would be unlikely to have seen before”.
