This is a part-time, 15-week course in painting providing basic technical skills to underpin a painting practice. Students will learn how to prepare and create a variety of grounds and surfaces, best practice in relation to materials, the physical and chemical rules for the application of paint, advanced colour theory, tonal value and glazing. The module aims to provide students with the founding skills and material knowledge for underpinning a painting practice. Students will learn a depth of knowledge in colour theory, modulation and paint application. Students will learn the chemical properties of paint and supports. The course will be delivered in the form of lectures, group crits and discussion, learner reviews, projectwork, self-directed learning, studio practice, recommended reading lists.

This is a CPD Diploma in Fine Art Painting and Drawing, Technological University Dublin, Minor Award with a NQF Level: 8 and 30 ECTS.
Each student must register for the CPD in Painting and Drawing to undertake any of the modules. To receive the full diploma, each student must successfully complete all six modules and present a portfolio upon completion for assessment. Each module is worth 5 credits for a total of 30 credits. Each 5 credit module will be assessed and marks will be noted. Students can take all six modules in the same academic year or complete separate modules over a number of years.
The six modules do not need to be completed in a set number of years. Therefore, there are various combinations in which the modules can be completed e.g. two modules a year over four years, three in one year and three the following year etc.
