We are delighted to announce our new RHA Arts-In-Education programme with sponsorship from IPUT.
The first project in this programme took place in June 2019, with second class students from St. Brigid’s Primary School and visual artist Michelle Doyle. Across three weeks, three 2nd class groups took part in a zine making project with Doyle, assisted by artist Sophie Behal. The class groups took part in three workshops, with an official zine launch taking place during the last week of school.
Doyle visited the school over the three weeks. On the first day, Doyle introduced the idea of a zine and what a zine is to the class. In the next two sessions, the students each designed their own page to go into their class zine with the assistance of Doyle and Behal, and each contributed a design which featured on the cover of the zine – making a collaborative zine cover. Doyle edited three zines which went to print, and the final zine was launched in the school by Michelle Doyle, RHA Director Patrick T. Murphy, and RHA Learning + Public Engagement Curator Róisín Bohan, as well as the three 2nd class teachers, Meg, Áine and Olive, celebrating the students’ work.
Zine making is a part of Doyle’s artistic practice and sharing this with the students produced some wonderful results. The students’ colourful zines demonstrated the DIY nature of zine making… some of the students even made their own zines at home!
Our RHA Schools Programme will continue in Autumn 2019. Keep an eye on this page for updates.
