MY MIND’S I
Venue: Butler Gallery, Kilkenny
24th oCtober – 13th DeCember
Following a very well received showing at the Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, Janet Mullarney’s critically acclaimed exhibition My Mind’s I begins it’s Irish tour this autumn. Mullarney’s first major solo exhibition in five years curated by Aoife Ruane, Director of Highlnes Gallery, Drogheda, earlier this year, tours to the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, opening on Saturday 24 October and continuing until 13 December. The title of the exhibition refers not only to the idiom ‘mind’s eye’ but also the human ability to experience visual mental imagery, and the power of the psychic imagination to communicate complex subliminal codes. In the exhibition, small fragile sculptures are placed against simple backdrops within a heightened lighting scheme, allowing mysterious theatrical scenes to unfold. The juxtaposition of these small seemingly insignificant figures against large open spaces will evoke a sense of anarchic independence as well as alluding to the subversive interior of the artist’s mind. The exhibition developed Highlanes Gallery, with lighting design by Marcus Costello, has been awarded an Arts Council Touring Grant. Irish Times Art Critic Aidan Dunne’s five star review remarked ‘Enter Mullarney’s world and you fall through an imaginative trapdoor into another realm of fables and fairy tales, where animal characters stand in for humans and meaning is cut loose from the bounds of convention. Her acrobats and performers evoke the heady, heightened space of the circus ring.’ Audiences should make it their business to visit, or indeed re-visit the exhibition, which will take a new form on each leg of its tour.
