This is the final in the series of exhibitions that has over the past five years attempted to identify and present some of the most exciting artists emerging onto the scene. Chosen by RHA Director, Patrick T. Murphy, and Exhibitions Curator, Ruth Carroll, all of these artists have been featured in the many open exhibitions that occur through the country from Belfast to Cork, from Limerick to Claremorris.
To complete the series all of the twenty-seven artists have been invited to participate in an anthology of the programme. This will be an important opportunity for visitors to exercise their diagnostic talents as to what is happening in contemporary Irish art today. Issues of urbanity, materiality and materialism, identity and self-determination abound.
Whatever the issue these artists display an intelligence and sophistication in their approach and comment.
The exhibition includes two of the artists currently representing Ireland at the Venice Biennale, Stephen Brandes and Mark Garry. Others are, from 2001, Mark Clare, Brendan Earley, Kristina Huxley, Eoghan McTigue, Mary Kelly, Liam O’Callaghan, Katy Simpson; from 2002, Amanda Coogan, Amy O’Riordan, Vanessa O’Reilly, Oliver Comerford, AudioVisualDisco (David Timmons & Cathal Connaughton), Paul Nugent; from 2003, Gemma Browne, Romek Delimata, Jeanette Doyle, Neva Elliott, Gail O’Reilly, Linda Quinlan; from 2004, John Gerrard, Martin Healy, Nevan Lahart, Julie Merriman, Ciaran Murphy, Sonja Suominen.
Eurojet is a private airline operating out of Dublin airport. Their visionary support of this series has aided many of these artists in establishing their reputations..
