A visit to Kilkenny Arts Festival followed by a studio visit with artist David Quinn recipient of the Tony O’Malley Studio Residency Award 2015.
The Friends trip to the Kilkenny Arts Festival and the Tony O’Malley studio residency will take place again this year. The day will consist of a stroll through Kilkenny town where we will work our way through the different exhibition venues at the Arts Festival including the Butler Gallery where we will receive talks on the exhibitions from the curators or invigilators in each venue. Details of the line up will be released in early June so keep an eye on www.kilkennyarts.ie as further exhibition plans are unveiled. After visiting these shows we will have lunch in the Kilkenny Design Centre Café overlooking the cobbled courtyards of Kilkenny Castle and grounds.
For the remainder of the afternoon we will be visiting the recipient of the Tony O’Malley studio residency award, David Quinn who has kindly offered to give the Friends a tour of his studio in Callan, Kilkenny. Administered by the RHA this residency is awarded to two artists per year. “I see painting as being a type of silent poetry and my own small pieces as visual haikus. In spirit they are descended from the intimism of Bonnard and Vuillard (an art described by André Gide as “speaking in a low tone, suitable to confidences”) and the pure expressionism of the New York School of abstractionists. They are also partly inspired my love of Dublin city, old paperback books, musical notation, arte povera and the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi amongst other things.” David Quinn.
