While up to the Baroque, biblical-theological themes were predominant in visual art, in modernity religious subject matter has become much less evident. Yet, many modern and contemporary artists have engaged with biblical and other religious themes. The lecture will focus on relevant works by leading twentieth century artists. Dr Gesa E. Thiessen is a theologian. Her pioneering PhD on theology and modern Irish art was published in 1999, Columba Press. Having taught for many years at Milltown Institute, she now lectures at Trinity College and is Visiting Scholar at Sarum College, Salisbury. She has widely published on theology and the arts, including Theological Aesthetics – A Reader, SCM/Eerdmans, 2004.
