Michael Cullen RHA
Michael Cullen was born in Co Wicklow in 1946. In the late 60s, as a night student, he attended the Central School of Art and Design, London and Brighton School of Art, for life drawing. He studied painting at NCAD from 1970 – 1973.
Since 1968 he has had numerous solo exhibitions and his work has been included in some of the most prestigious group shows representing contemporary Irish art at home and internationally.
He has won awards that include Arts Council bursaries, 1977, 1982 and 1984, the Independent Artists Maur painting Award 1984, the Arnotts National Portrait Award 1989, the Alice Hammerschlag Award 1995 and the De Veres Award for a Work of Distinction at the RHA Annual Exhibition in 2005.
His work is represented in public and private collections including; The National Gallery of Ireland; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; The Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin; The Ulster Museum, Belfast; the Berlin Senate; The Arts Council of Ireland; Trinity College, Dublin; AIB and Bank of Ireland. He is also a member of Aosdána.
Michael Cullen became an Associate Member of the Academy in December 2005 and full Member in 2007.
